In a historic move for East and Central African football, the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) have officially announced that three of Sudan’s most renowned football clubs will take part in the 2025–2026 Rwanda Premier League Championship.
The clubs—Al Merrikh S.C, Al Hilal S.C, and El Ahli SC Wad Medani—have been granted formal approval by FERWAFA and the Rwanda Premier League Board to participate in Rwanda’s top-flight competition next season.
According to FERWAFA, the groundbreaking decision underscores its ongoing commitment to promoting regional integration, competitiveness, and the global growth of football through stronger international cooperation.
The inclusion of Sudanese teams comes amid efforts to provide stability and continuity for Sudanese football, which has faced disruptions due to the country’s ongoing challenges. Their participation is expected to not only raise the level of competition but also strengthen sporting ties between Rwanda and Sudan.
FERWAFA confirmed that discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are ongoing to secure the necessary approvals for the cross-border participation. Once finalized, the Rwanda Premier League Management will release updated details on the revised league calendar, fixtures, and participation guidelines.
This unprecedented collaboration could mark a new era for regional football, offering fans a unique opportunity to witness international club rivalries within Rwanda’s domestic league.
